Designing the DC bus
- DC-link capacitance: C480 / C481, 450 – 2,300 V DC, 33 – 2,000 µF, to IEC 61071, −40 °C to +85 °C.
- Bus filtering and storage: MKP-V (round metal case, 600 – 5,000 V DC, dV/dt > 20 V/µs) and MKP-F (rectangular case) for wind, PV and energy-storage converters.
- Module protection: CBB84 low-inductance snubber capacitors across the switching device.
Why film replaced electrolytic in new designs
Three reasons decide it. Ripple current: a polypropylene DC-link carries far more per unit volume than an electrolytic of the same size. Lifetime: an electrolytic halves its life for every 10 °C rise and ends abruptly, whereas the film part self-heals and degrades gradually. Maintenance: a converter whose DC bus is not a wear item does not need a scheduled replacement interval.
What to send
For a DC-link proposal we need the DC voltage, the switching frequency, the ripple current to be absorbed, the allowed voltage ripple and the available envelope. For a snubber proposal, the module type and the loop geometry are the starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace an electrolytic DC-link with a film capacitor?
Usually yes, and with better ripple-current capability and life — but capacitance per unit volume is lower, so the capacitance value and the mechanical envelope have to be re-derived. Send the original part number and the available space.
Which standard do the DC-link capacitors follow?
The C480 / C481 family is designed to IEC 61071.
Do you supply capacitors for traction converters?
Yes — traction converters are among the applications of the DC-link and snubber families.
