The duty: equalising static voltage
In an SVC or an HVDC valve, several devices sit in series and the AC static voltage has to be distributed evenly between them. That is the job of the grading and damping capacitor: it presents a defined, stable impedance across each element so that no single device sees a disproportionate share. Stability of capacitance over temperature and time is therefore the governing parameter, not capacitance density.
Two families
- JWF — grading and damping capacitors, rated 2.16 – 4.5 kV, −40 °C to +70 °C, indoor or outdoor installation. Applied at the world highest-altitude converter station (3,800 m).
- JKMJ — impregnated liquid dielectric with stacked construction, 2.4 – 6.6 µF, particularly suited to uniform AC static voltage distribution in SVC cabinets and high-power drive systems. Custom designs supported.
Field reference
The JWF series has been applied at a converter station at 3,800 m altitude. Operation at that altitude means reduced air density and therefore reduced external insulation withstand — a condition that has to be designed for rather than assumed, and one that provides a useful reference for high-altitude and high-pollution installations.
| Series | Function | Rated voltage | Capacitance | Temperature |
|---|
| JWF | Grading and damping | 2.16 – 4.5 kV | per rating table | −40 … +70 °C |
| JKMJ | Grading and damping (SVC, high-power drives) | per rating table | 2.4 – 6.6 µF | −40 … +70 °C |
| BKMJ | Shunt compensation, power factor correction | 400 – 525 V | per rating table | 50 / 60 Hz |
| C480 / C481 | DC-link / converter DC bus | 450 – 2,300 V DC | 33 – 2,000 µF | −40 … +85 °C |
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a grading capacitor and a shunt capacitor?
A grading capacitor distributes AC static voltage evenly between series-connected devices; a shunt capacitor supplies reactive power for compensation. They sit in different positions and are specified against different parameters.
Do you have high-altitude references?
Yes — the JWF series has been applied at a converter station at 3,800 m altitude.
Can the capacitors be supplied for outdoor installation?
The JWF series is available for indoor or outdoor installation; confirm the pollution class and altitude when inquiring.
