The three routes
- C992 — high-temperature organic film capacitors, −55 °C to +200 °C, 50 – 2,500 V, 0.1 – 8 µF. Supplied for high-temperature power supply and filtering stages of downhole measurement instruments.
- CV series — high-temperature mica capacitors, −55 °C to +155 °C (up to +250 °C on special order), 630 V – 20 kV DC, 100 pF – 2.2 µF, for filters, blocking and resonant circuits where capacitance must not drift with temperature.
- CA42 / CA45L — hermetically sealed solid tantalum capacitors, −55 °C to +125 °C, 6.3 – 125 V, 0.1 – 470 µF, for filtering, storage and decoupling.
Why mica rather than ceramic downhole
Above roughly 125 °C the temperature coefficient of ordinary ceramic dielectrics becomes the dominant error term in a circuit. A low-frequency ceramic such as N70 can lose about 70 % of its capacitance across its rated range. In a logging tool whose calibration is referenced to a time constant or a resonant frequency, that drift turns directly into measurement error. A mica dielectric holds capacitance over the same span, which is why the CV series is specified in these positions.
What to send with an inquiry
Downhole inquiries move fastest when they include the tool type, the ambient temperature at the capacitor position, the voltage and capacitance required, and the available envelope. If you are replacing an existing part, the part number and the original datasheet shorten the cross-reference to a single round.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest ambient temperature you can support?
C992 film capacitors are rated to +200 °C, and the CV series mica capacitors to +155 °C with production up to +250 °C on special order.
Do you supply for MWD / LWD and wireline logging tools?
Yes — these are among the primary applications of the C992 and CV series. Send the tool type and the temperature at the capacitor position.
Can you supply small quantities for a prototype tool?
Yes. Small batches and prototype quantities are supported.
Is documentation available for a qualification file?
Yes — technical specification for the part number, dimensional drawing, and batch acceptance test data on request.
